By Genie Prep Team

Pursuing a career in engineering can be overwhelming, especially when facing challenges like the FE exam. That’s why we’re sharing inspiring stories from individuals who have overcome obstacles on their path to becoming licensed professionals. We hope these stories remind you that perseverance and the right strategies and materials can lead to success, no matter how difficult the journey.

Today’s story is from Tanesha, a 2011 graduate and dedicated engineer who overcame repeated setbacks to finally pass her FE exam and advance in her career. The following blog post has been adapted from a video interview, which you can watch here.

Why I Decided to Pursue The FE

I decided to pursue the FE because I wanted to advance my career and obtain my Professional Engineer (PE) license. While I was in college, the FE exam was a requirement for graduation, but more importantly, it was a stepping stone towards my ultimate goal of becoming a licensed professional engineer. I knew that passing the FE exam would open doors for me in the engineering industry, allowing me to take on more significant responsibilities and secure my job. The journey was challenging, but my passion for engineering kept me going.

How I Overcame Repeated Failures

Overcoming repeated failures was one of the toughest challenges in my journey. I took the FE exam eleven times, and each failure took a toll on my self-esteem. Initially, I didn’t know how to study effectively. I kept using the same materials and methods, hoping for a different result, but it didn’t work. My turning point came when I realized I needed to change my approach. Despite the emotional strain, I knew that giving up wasn’t an option. I kept pushing myself, driven by my passion for engineering and my goal of becoming a licensed professional.

What Changed in My Study Routine

For a long time, I struggled with the FE exam because my study routine was ineffective. I kept using the same materials and methods, hoping for a different outcome. It wasn’t until I received advice from Praneetha that things started to change. She suggested I study early in the morning, and although it seemed daunting at first, I adjusted my routine to start studying at 4 AM. This new schedule allowed me to be more consistent and focused. Creating a structured study plan and sticking to it was a game-changer for me.

How Faith and Discipline Helped Me Succeed

Faith and discipline played crucial roles in my journey to passing the FE exam. I relied heavily on my faith, praying regularly and holding onto scriptures like Ephesians 3:20 and Matthew 6:33, which gave me strength and motivation. Discipline was equally important. I created a consistent study schedule, waking up at 4 AM to study every day. This routine helped me stay focused and retain information better. Combining my faith with a disciplined approach to studying made all the difference in overcoming my challenges.

I feel amazing because my job is secure. That’s one reason why I feel amazing. And, yeah, another stepping stone is my PE license.

What Changed in My Study Materials

Initially, my study materials weren’t effective. I used resources like Lindeburg’s book, but I didn’t understand the content. For my final attempts, I used Genie Prep’s FE bundle course – Morning and Afternoon FE Accelerator, as well as a statics course and practice exams. These resources were more aligned with the exam content and my study needs. I also focused on solving problems independently before checking solutions, which significantly improved my understanding and retention of the material.

How Organizing My Study Space Helped Me Stay Focused

One of the significant changes that helped me succeed was organizing my study space. My office was initially disorganized, making it hard to focus. With the help of my mom, we cleaned and redecorated the entire space. I even brought in a 50-inch TV to use as a computer monitor and set up a wireless keyboard. Creating a fun and inviting atmosphere made me look forward to studying every day.

What Kept Me Motivated to Keep Trying

Staying motivated despite numerous setbacks was challenging, but my passion for the engineering industry and my career goals kept me going. I knew that passing the FE exam was a crucial step towards advancing my career and obtaining my PE license. The desire to stamp and seal plans, take on more significant projects, and contribute meaningfully to my field drove me. Additionally, I constantly reminded myself that others had overcome similar obstacles, and their stories inspired me to persevere and never give up.

How I Finally Passed the FE Exam

After multiple attempts and changes in my study routine, I finally passed the FE exam. The key strategies that contributed to my success included creating a structured study plan, studying early in the mornings, and using the right study materials. I also practiced solving problems independently before reviewing the solutions, which helped reinforce my understanding. Staying consistent with my study schedule from April to October and keeping a positive mindset were crucial. Ultimately, these changes and my persistent efforts led to my success.
